Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing kids that love learning and the outdoors! We have many students that participate in the medical magnet program and are focused on health and wellness in their everyday classes! We also have a group of students that participate in the culinary arts program that have a special interest in health and how it is interwoven into nutrition! Both groups of students have come together to form a garden club at our school. Their focus is on creating a sustainable organic garden for our school community!
My Project
Donations to this project will help our public school students to turn their gardening dreams into reality! This is the first year of our garden club, and the students have already picked out what items they want to grow and how the items will be used! Our culinary arts director and cafeteria directors have agreed to use the produce from this organic garden to compliment our students meals and allow for healthy creations in cooking classes! In addition, these materials will allow our students to truly experience what it means to have healthy food from farm to table and teach them the importance of health and eco-literacy and how the two intertwine!
The materials will be used to set up the actual garden.
Our students have created a blueprint of what they need, and these items will provide the foundation! The garden beds will be located next to the potting benches, to allow for optimal hands on learning! Also, the gardening tools will allow them to have items to work with on a day to day basis while learning the importance of organic foods and nutrition! The composter and rain barrels will ensure that the students also learn about the importance of our environment and sustainability!
