This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students at our school are some the most hardworking young adults I have had the pleasure to work with. Everyday I have students coming to my classroom before school, during lunch, and after school to work on their piano skills, perfect their bass lines, and hone their drum grooves.

Students at our academy come from working class families with 85% of our students eligible for free lunch.

Eighty percent of our students are hispanic, with many English Language Learners.

For most of our students, the music room is the only space they have access to musical instruments as well as a the freedom to express themselves through song and dance.

This past year our middle school classes focused on learning the basics of keyboarding, drumming, and singing through popular music. Our 9th grade classes dived deeper into keyboarding, drumming, and composition through the use of Garageband. The 10-12 classes focused on playing in groups and put on a performance that featured nearly 20 student musicians in 4 different ensembles.

My Project

My students at my academy have excelled in keyboard over the past to two year. With the new 61 note Yamaha keyboards we will have enough for a classroom piano lab. This lab will allow for more students to work on piano technique in a group setting as well as solo practice. The headphones and headphone amplifier will play a role in our piano lab by allowing students to collaborate in small groups without disturbing others.

In our music class drums play an important role in learning about rhythm, groove, and dance.

The drumsticks, Jam Cajon, and the sample Pad Pro will provide students with new vehicles to explore the world of percussion. Jam Cajons will be used in our middle school drum circles as well as high school lessons centered around drumming and for students studying the drum set. The sample Pad Pro will be used in our music technology class, performance groups, and after-school recording program. Students will learn how to program MIDI triggers as well as record their own beats using this device. The xlr cables will be used by students both for singing in ensembles and in recording their own songs.

The instruments and supplies I am requesting will provide students with more opportunities to create, learn, and explore the music they love in group settings, solo, and in the studio. Thank you for helping us reach our goal.
