What happens when you make a mistake or don't succeed the first time? Do you give up or do you try again? I will be teaching my students about the growth mindset this year and hope that students will realize that they can overcome mistakes and obstacles and grow their brains!
"No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment." Researcher Carol S.
Dweck has defined mindset as a way of thinking...we each have either a fixed mindset or a mindset of growth. I want my students to grow their minds!
My classroom is made up of 25 third graders. They are eager learners who come from various backgrounds and require different instruction to meet their needs. They all have one thing in common ...they LOVE to have books read aloud to them!
Our school is located in a suburban area with many students on free and reduced price lunches. We are also a "Leader in Me" school that empowers students to be leaders in the 21st century.
My Project
I will be starting the year with the theme of hard work and perseverance. I will read the book, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain! by JoAnn Deak to teach my students more about the brain and how making mistakes and trying again strengthens the brain.
Throughout the year, I will read picture books during our daily morning meeting time to reinforce the growth mindset. Students will be able to relate to books written at their level and will begin to realize that they have the ability to "grow their brain" with hard work and perseverance.
Funding of this project would allow me to acquire and develop a collection of picture books for the students in my classroom and lay the groundwork for encouraging a growth mindset!
