My Project

The soil I am requesting will directly impact my students' hands-on learning experiences by providing them with the essential materials to start a garden. Soil is a fundamental element for growing plants, and with the right type of soil, students will learn about plant biology, ecosystems, and the importance of sustainability. They will gain practical knowledge about how soil health affects plant growth, as well as how to care for and cultivate a garden. This project offers students an opportunity to apply science concepts in a real-world context, and to observe the growth of plants they’ve planted and nurtured. Engaging in garden-based learning helps students connect academic concepts with tangible outcomes, fostering a deeper understanding of the environment and the natural world.

My goals for this project are to:

Provide students with an authentic, hands-on learning experience that connects science, math, and environmental studies in a meaningful way.

Teach students the importance of sustainable practices, including soil health, water conservation, and growing their own food.

Foster teamwork, responsibility, and patience as students work together to plant, care for, and observe their garden over time.

Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving as students troubleshoot challenges such as weather conditions, plant care, and garden maintenance.

Enhance students’ appreciation for nature and their local environment, creating a lasting connection between them and the natural world.

My students are incredibly curious, creative, and eager to learn. They come from diverse backgrounds and many are new to the concept of gardening. Despite their varying experiences, they share a strong desire to connect with nature and understand how things work. They thrive in hands-on learning environments where they can apply their ideas in practical ways. Through this garden project, they will not only build knowledge but also confidence, as they watch their hard work grow and flourish.
