Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Data shows that our children in urban demographics are coming into school settings sometimes even 40,000 vocabulary words less than other areas.
Many of my little people are coming from low socio-economical backgrounds who are struggling or have family members lacking the language to assist their children with the proper materials or skills that would help to lower the educational gap that exists in NYC.
Regardless of these factors, my students come into Kindergarten eager to learn and excited to read the rich emergent storybooks and nonfiction texts.
I want this eagerness and excitement to continue...
My Project
I want to make reading exciting right from the start of when our little ones enter their formal education years.
Our school has not had an open library or librarian for over 2 years so I would love to get some comfy reading cushions and perhaps even a reading teepee so that reading time can be using fun modes.
I still remember being young and crawling under a pretend teepee, turning on my flashlight and that being my reading space where I could create my own reading journey.
I would love to provide the same fun experience for my little ones as well.
