Did you know vegetables do not originally come from cans? Many of my 3rd grade students in our urban St. Louis school do not know where their food comes from. Many have never seen a garden, much less a farm! Our school is surrounded by asphalt, concrete and buildings. Many students live in apartments with no room for gardens and no one to care for even potted plants. A couple local parks add some green grass and scraggly bushes to the neighborhood agriculture, but most of my students miss out on experiencing the daily beauty and life present in the plant world.

In 3rd grade, we study plants, learn about their importance to human beings, and study the many ways we use plants and plant products every day. Students are often surprised by the things we learn because they have never had the opportunity to encounter plants or be a part of their growth.

By providing the soil, seeds and tools needed to cultivate a small garden (we already have small, but neglected, planters on our blacktop), you are opening the world of plants to my students both during school and in an after-school gardening club I'd like to start this year. You are helping them to learn science through real life experience.

You are sowing seeds of knowledge about our ecosystem, healthy eating, and life cycles. You are cultivating in them interest in science, responsibility, and conservation.
