My Students

Remember sitting in math class and all you heard was "wah, wah, wah" like when Charlie Brown talks to an adult. This is because the teacher was talking at you and you had no control over your own learning. I want my students to experience math through the use of manipulatives and not just watching.

My students live in a very low socio-economic part of the city.

Over 80% of our students are English Language Learners and we are one of the most frequented school for Newcomers into California. At home my students struggle to have basic needs meet, let alone being supported in their academic needs. In my classroom, I want my students to be successful. I can do this by providing opportunities to learn in a safe, enriching environment.

My Project

These manipulatives will really allow my students to touch and build with the geometric shapes. This will help eliminate abstract thinking when being introduced to a new concept. The place value blocks will supplement our meager classroom supplies and give all students a chance to use them for understanding expanded form problems, as well as, regrouping. Fractions seem to stump many people. By having the fraction circles the students will be able to play with and work out problems using these hands on tools to see how fractions correspond with one another. The opportunities are endless with manipulatives like these! These items are really so important because they will not only be reaching 30 of my students this year, but these materials will last me my teaching career! Think of how many students' lives you will be affecting in a positive way. Let's bring fun to math with math manipulatives!

My students need hands on manipulatives, like geometric shapes, place value block, and fraction circles, to learn the basics of mathematics.

Building abstract though processes begins with the concrete. For my classroom full of English Language Learners the basics are so important. They need to be able to touch and play with the manipulatives for proper abstract math development.
