Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my sociology classes, students explore how communities function, evolve, and sustain themselves. This project will give them a hands-on experience in rural sociology by incorporating gardening, self-sustainability, and mental health awareness into our studies. Through planting and caring for their own plants, students will connect abstract sociological concepts to real-life practices, deepening their understanding of rural life, food systems, and environmental sustainability.

My students are curious, insightful, and eager to learn in ways that go beyond textbooks.

They thrive when given opportunities to engage with the material in meaningful and interactive ways. Many of them have never had the chance to grow their own food or learn about the vital role agriculture plays in rural communities. This project will allow them to see firsthand how sustainability, mental well-being, and community resilience are interconnected.

With your support, I will provide seeds, soil, planters, and other materials necessary for a classroom planting session. As they nurture their plants, students will reflect on how access to resources, labor, and environmental factors shape rural life. Discussions on mental health will tie in as they experience the therapeutic benefits of gardening—something rural communities have long understood.

By engaging in this project, my students will build a lasting connection to sociology, environmental responsibility, and their own well-being. Your donation will help create an experience they won’t forget—one that fosters critical thinking, sustainability, and hands-on learning.
