Growing in Science: Helping Immigrant Students with Mental Health

My Project

I am seeking funding to finance a 2x4 AC Infinity Grow Light that will be used as part of Energy and Energy Production in a high school Physics class to grow fruits and vegetables from around the world.

We are going to use the grow light to grow native plants from the students' home countries while learning about solar energy.

Biology and Physics seem like completely different topics, but we are going to discover that they work hand in hand. We get energy from the sun, harnessing that the sun's light via solar panels, similar to how plants convert the sun's energy into food. Edison High School is the greenest campus in the state of Minnesota with our solar panel arrays and water collection techniques. I am attempting to tie together physics and biology concepts to allow the cross-cutting concepts between the sciences, and how they all work together. Having a grow tent in a physics classroom allows me to borrow upon prior knowledge; concepts from biology, a class all my students have previously had. Students will see first hand that the different branches of the sciences aren’t stand-alone topics, rather, they all work together. Collecting energy from the sun to produce electricity can be paralleled to the photosynthesis within a plant.

The grow light will give us the perfect light offering a higher rater of plant health and success.

Students will gain skills by growing and harvesting their own food. This is going to help build student confidence. Student health has declined over the years. Having a project where students get to enjoy the "fruits of their labor" is an incredibly fulfilling feeling. Students glow with excitement as they pick vegetables from our community garden. A classroom grow light will allow us to bring that excitement inside, year-round.
