Growing in Science: Helping English Language Learners Develop Sustainability Skills

Help me give my students propagation domes, as well as fabric pots, so that we can grow fruits and vegetables from their home-countries, and learn about plant care and sustainability in physics class.

My Project

I am seeking funding to finance 3 propagation domes and fabric plant pots that will be used as part of Energy and Energy Production in a high school Physics class to grow fruits and vegetables from around the world.

We are going to use the propagation domes and fabric plant pots to grow native plants from the students' home countries while learning about solar energy.

The propagation domes are vital and will help us get seeds started so that we can help them develop into strong, healthy, hearty, plants. Living in Minnesota, it becomes quite difficult, even in an environmentally controlled classroom, to propagate seeds and other clones from plants.

The propagation domes will help us to be much more successful during our initial growing phase.

We are learning about plants in a physics class during our Energy Production Unit. We have a large English Language Learner population. Students have expressed their longing for their home country. It is my hope that we can bring some of their home country into the classroom to make them feel more comfortable and excited to learn.

Students will gain skills by growing and harvesting their own food, but most importantly, they will feel a connection to their produce. This is going to help build student confidence and happiness. Having a project where students get to enjoy the "fruits of their labor" is an incredibly fulfilling feeling. Students glow with excitement as they pick vegetables from our community garden. Having a garden inside the classroom will allow us to bring that excitement inside, year-round.
