My Students

"Teaching children about the natural world should be seen as one of the most important events in their lives" -Thomas Berry. In today's society it is increasingly important to teach our children to become participants and appreciate our environment.

My students are 7th graders who have elected to participate in a "Go Green" enrichment class; they will study ways to become environmentalists.

They are curious about how to conserve and preserve in our daily lives. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area in Michigan. We are the only school in our district to have a greenhouse. We are in the process of getting repairs done through community volunteers. The school budget does not allow for monies to be spent on supplies for this class.

My Project

These resources will create an opportunity for my students to engage in activities that they can observe, experiment, nurture and learn. Students will learn valuable lessons in nutrition and environmentalism. The program will give our class an opportunity to improve the school grounds by germinating our own plants and flowers. Students will gain an appreciation for their natural surroundings and an understanding of the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle through composting.

Donations will give these students motivation to improve our community through applying their knowledge and getting their 'hands dirty'.

These resources will help our students gain an appreciation for agriculture, the 'green' environment, and conservation. When students have a passion they become empowered and successful in other areas of life too!
