My Project

Help me create a community where students learn together to become kinder and more compassionate towards each other and the world they live in. Building relationships is one of the most important part of learning to be compassionate. Rhonda Bondie from Harvard Graduate School of Education said, "You can't change the community if you're not in the community." In my classroom and crew (advisory) space this year, I would like to work on supporting students to know themselves -- knowing and expressing their emotions and bringing their authentic self to the classroom -- and to know each other and be able to have deeper level of compassion, understanding, and empathy. As Bondie says, "The greatest resource in the classroom is the students themselves."

Throughout the year, I am going to use the materials requested in this project -- the emotions chart, feelings card, encouraging stickers and arts and game materials -- to help students get to know each other and grow the sense of community in my classroom.

Students will get to know each other and each other's story, learn to listen actively, encourage each other positively, be aware of their and others' feelings, learn to express gratitude for help received and learn to receive forgiveness for mistakes. These activities will help them learn other person's story, empathizing with individual struggles.

The goal is for students to develop skills to see the world through the eyes of another person in order to help and support them. Students will learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others through active listening and empathizing. I will measure growth in my students' understanding and exercise of compassion by frequent journal writing, group discussions and individual and small group check-ins.
