Growing Healthy Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs in the South Bronx

My students need 2 vegetable tiered planters so that they can grow herbs, flowers and vegetables within the classroom. Also, they need some vertical garden hanging planters to place on the walls, as well.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While our school is located in the South Bronx, our students come from all over the borough. A huge majority of our students do live in the neighborhood. However, many of those students look forward to going away to college outside of the Bronx. They are quite a lovely bunch of students that take their education seriously. Many of the students run after-school clubs, work, and/or volunteer their time locally.

Our school is a PBAT (Performance based assessment task) school.

That means that in order to graduate, they must present capstone projects in their 4 main subjects. In addition to that many students take courses in Law and Social Justice, Robotics, Financial Literacy, Programming, and even Hamilton! We have a strong community here and the students are the glue.

My Project

Students will learn about botany, healthy lifestyle and food choices as well as develop an understanding of urban farming. Students will conduct problem based learning projects and use an inquiry based approach while using the requested materials. They will grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. Students will grow food for themselves and their school community. One day, we would like to involve family and local community members with the project to provide healthy eating choices for all.

We will place the vertical planters on the wall of my science classroom.

We will place the towers on two tables within my classroom. Ideally, we will provide enough space for all students to grow something that they have personally selected. Ideally, they will take what they grow home with them to share with family.
