My Students

AP Biology prepares students for biology at a college level. If I can make much of that tangible to my students, it reinforces the concepts and makes connections that they will remember. Many of them find evolution difficult, but with this lab kit, the concept can be more easily understood.

At my school, students have an art focus (visual, performance, written) that they major in.

The school is a magnet school with an audition process for students to be selected in their major. Because it is a school of choice, students are motivated to take challenging courses. Many of the students, while artistically gifted, are also interested in science and take AP courses to ready them for a major in college science. This project will help reach those students and prepare them for a college and career STEM experience.

My Project

We need the Population Genetics Kit because it contains the seeds and the materials necessary to sow the seeds. We also need the plant grow light set up to study evolution in a hands-on manner with plants. These will allow my students to grow Wisconsin Fast Plants (found in the Population Genetics kit), quantify the plants' traits at a population level, compare those traits to the expected frequencies, and witness the evolution of a population after just a few generations. Students will grow these plants themselves, which will give them ownership of the project. It will expose them to the life cycle of plants from seed to flowering. The materials in this project will also prepare them for the science and research practices that are a major component of the AP Biology curriculum and test.

Donations towards this project will be felt throughout the school year, as this is an ongoing project which will take several months and follow the plants through many generations.

This project will also impact future students of mine, as the majority of the project supplies are non-consumable and will become a fixture in the lab for subsequent experiments and upcoming school years.
