Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is for nurturing the gardener in every student in my classroom, and all that means as nature journaling scientists, curious readers, and creative writers. All of my students love to have green in their lives, either to flex their experienced green thumbs, or to experience caring for a plant for the first time. I want to give every student the privilege caring for another living thing, and in the process have it beautify the places they call home. I am asking for a variety of plants students can care for both in school and at home. Students will use their plants for scientific observations, but also as muses for reading and for their own writing.

Please help my students find their voices and their hearts by giving them plants to care for.

Pablo Neruda wrote about gardening:

"supe de pronto, agricultora mía, que no solo tus manos, sino tu corazón eran de tierra, que allí estabas hacienda cosas tuyas," / “I suddenly knew my farmer, That not only your hands, but your heart They were from the ground that there you were making things of yours,”

My students come from all over the world. They are all recently immigrated English Language Learners from over a dozen countries, speaking almost as many languages. I am often the first teacher they meet in the United States, and sometimes I am the first science teacher they have ever had. Regardless of previous education, my students come to our school with a rich history of life experiences. Help me build on that foundation with plants for them to love!
