My Students

Our elementary is a kindergarten through fourth grade elementary school in Alabama. Our elementary services a wide range of students. Our population is 86% white, 8% black, 5% two or more races, and 1% Other. 66% of our students received lunches at a free or reduced rate, and approximately 30 students receive food for the weekend, through a program called Backpack Buddies. Poverty is a definite challenge at our school. Many of our students come to school without the supplies or parental support they need.

Many of our students come to school below grade level.

According to STAR Math results 31% of our students are below the 25th percentile in math. 26.6% of our students are below the 25th percentile in reading. Recent DIBELS results show that 79% of our students require significant intervention in order to meet grade level benchmarks. Our ACT Aspire results show that 52% of our students are in need of support or are close in reading, and 37% of our students are close or in need of support in math.

My Project

My students come from many different family backgrounds and lifestyles. They need motivation to persevere through tough tasks and to believe in themselves enough to set amazing goals. This project funds a set of 25 amazing picture books that will promote a growth mindset for my students. The books have characters who encounter challenges and have the grit to overcome the challenge and succeed in the task. My students will be inspired by the characters in this book to set their own goals, persevere through tasks that seem difficult at first, and tackle challenges that they never imagined they would be willing to face.
