My Students

Our Title I school community is a diverse mix of Guyanese, African American, Caribbean, Asian and Hispanic families. We are a PreK-5th grade school in Queens, NY. We believe that all students can meet high standards of excellence, as well as develop social and creative skills through a cooperative effort of the teachers, administration, families, and community.

This year we would like the chance to plant a seed of something very special in the hearts, minds, and spirits of our students.

One positive thing to come out of an otherwise very challenging 2021 school year, was that we were able to utilize our outdoor spaces for learning. After a long year of being inside we cherished the times we spent outside in the sun playing, reading, but most of all gardening.

We worked long and hard weeding, digging, and planting whatever we could with very limited resources. Our goal this spring is to take on this revitalization project with full force and the right tools to create a place where our students can enjoy nature, and explore the world of horticulture.

My Project

Creating a flourishing and vibrant flower and herb garden will help students develop horticulture skills and an appreciation for nature. Just being in a garden and around plants has positive mental health benefits. Students need opportunities to decompress from the stress of the day. We will use these resources and supplies to create a gardening oasis for our whole community to enjoy. Throughout the process we will plant and grow with the seeds and soil. They will learn the importance of sustainability while applying their gardening skills to social-emotional applications. This project will focus on interacting with nature with the goal of students to learn about the importance of ecology and cultivate lifelong horticulture skills.
