Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach young adult students ages 18 to 22 with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. Our Successful Transition Education Program for Students (STEPS) focuses on employment training and independent living skills. I have developed an in-school enterprise (business) for my students to learn money skills, financial literacy, and employment skills such as keeping inventory, working a cash register and operating machines. We would be using the water bottles to personalize and sell through our in-school gift shop that is fully operated by our students with disabilities. These initial bottles would allow us the funds to put back in and continue to teach the skills. Our principal purchased a Cricut machine for our use but budget does not allow for the items needed to personalize and sell. All monies generated go back in to purchase items for the shop or for classroom materials. My students also build technology skills as they have to learn the computer design program for the Cricut, they learn Excel to maintain inventory data, and they operate a cash register and work the store window learning customer service skills, social skills with general education peers and money skills (counting money, making change, etc). This project is a small ask to get our new endeavor off the ground. Or as my principal would put it, Mrs. Gonzalez crazy new idea. I need my students to learn the skills that will help make them productive, employable and engaged members of our society. With your help my young adult students get to feel purposeful and a valued member of our school and community.
