My Project

I am a first year TK-1 extensive support needs teacher, and I have never been as passionate in my life as I am about this career and the kids in my class. My central philosophy as an educator is that I am not only preparing my students to be successful academically, but successful in life, which includes gainful employment, independence, and autonomy. Although my students are young, I firmly believe that it never too early to begin teaching these skills and instilling these values.

The overview of what I aim to do in this project is work together with my students to create and maintain a garden, however the process and result of achieving this will be much more fulfilling than the simple garden that will meet the eye.

My students will learn about the plant life cycle, both through academic activities and the hands-on experience of watching this life cycle play out before their eyes. My students will be able to choose from a variety of nutritious vegetables to grow, and from there they will take on the responsibility of caring for their plant. While they will receive support from school staff, ultimately each child will be responsible for their own plant, from choosing what they would like to grow, to planting the seeds, to watering it, and eventually harvesting it to making a meal out of it.

This project will combine science, social emotional learning, and health/nutrition, to help my students develop into the holistic and autonomous individuals they are. The life skills that my students will acquire throughout the duration of this project are truly invaluable, and I cannot thank you enough for supporting this project!
