Growing Dendrites

My students need supplies to be able to go into our garden and make observations of how plants are going through mitosis, meiosis and genetic processes.

My Students

What happens in the microscopic field can be so hard to understand. Seeing how a plant develops from seed to fruit helps to make it real to my students. However, going into the field to make useful observations can be hard when we don't have something to write on and write with.

My students are wonderful but are often the over looked students.

Growing up in a rough neighborhood, poor families and lots of bad influences has caused so many of my students to already get into trouble and discarded by society. Many others just struggle with catching up with information they missed for so many reasons. Many of my students can't afford their basic school supplies, but I never let a student go without. Every year I give binders, pens, pencils, paper, snacks and other supplies to any student in need. However, as our school keeps loosing money and people, we have less and less to do even our basic job. With 10 days lost this year of the school year and pay, getting supplies for students and my classroom is harder. Taking the students into the garden to show how life works and that they can grow their own food, gives my struggling students a hands-on experience that has definitive progress which keeps my "more patience" students engaged and learning.

My Project

"Grab a clipboard with color-coded paper on a sunny Cali day so we can go into the garden and see what has happened with our plants." Getting to go outside, get their hands dirty and see progress is so much better than looking at a textbook and reading about how plants grow. Being able to have the students work and take notes, not on their classmates backs, keeps the lessons engaging and purposeful. Beyond going to the garden, having supplies to take the class outside gives my easily disruptive students a change of scenery to keep them engaged.

Science is something that is more than words written in a book, it happens in the world.

Being able to use the schoolyard as part of the classroom is great, especially since we don't have the money to take field trips. With lots of trees, bushes, rocks and our garden, science can become engaging as the students get to move out of the classroom and still do their work.
