Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a speech therapist in a majority of minority students school, I work with bilingual English/Spanish special needs learners from 8:1:1 and 12:1:1 classrooms. My special needs students have many different communication delays. They also really enjoy reading using books in my therapy room even if they are not yet at a reading level.

Some of my students are non-verbal and benefit greatly from the use of visuals and symbols to communicate.

Creating communication books and tools can become especially expensive when we don't have the required material on hand. My goal is to have the resources to provide communication books for my students who are still learning to engage more in conversation using symbols. I have new non-verbal learners this year and having mini binders, laminating pouches, and file folders will provide me with the materials to create hands-on and at-reach materials for them to communicate their wants and needs.

As I try to grow my student's speech library and fill it with bilingual English and Spanish titles for them to enjoy, I need more bins to keep this area organized. This will allow for independence and organization for students to feel comfortable finding and sorting through titles independently. A bean bag chair will allow for my students to have flexible seating and fulfill sensory needs. Having a small vacuum cleaner to keep our space clean will remind my students to show appreciation for our reading space and speech area by keeping it clean. I am very grateful for the opportunity to try and fundraise for the materials needed to help my students progress this school year in a clean, organized, and visually appropriate space.
