Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our 5th-grade classes come from incredibly disparate countries and cultures. They also face frequent mobility. Most of my students’ families have limited resources and education, and outside of the Title I school they attend, my students routinely face significant challenges related to their socioeconomic status.

Many of our students may be impacted by the lack of resources and structure during distance learning.

Amid the current pandemic, we are committed to providing authentic, hands-on learning, even from the distance. We know that some students have complex home environments, and can easily get distracted or disengaged when not in the right environment. With this grant, we are aiming to engage all of them and provide a unique experience.

My Project

With this grant, every one of our fifth graders will get their personal plant research kit. They will experience a full life cycle in 30 to 40 days (about the time will be doing distance learning).

Experiential learning or “learning by doing” and reflecting can stimulate academic inquiry by promoting student initiative and interdisciplinary learning.

The students' hands-on experience will be integrated into Science (life cycle, matter, scientific method), Math (measuring, graphs, tables, comparison), and Language Arts. As part of our unit, they will write about the process through different genres and they will read multiple books and articles about sustainability and the relationship between humans and our environment.

We are excited to try new things and keep our students motivated as we rise to the challenge COVID has imposed. We truly appreciate your support!
