Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living in New York City, many of my students currently have limited experiences outside of the urban environment. This can make teaching about Earth and its systems extremely challenging. Although many of our kids have a love and passion for the sciences, our goal as educators is to have them do the work of and think like professional scientists.

Over the years, we have created opportunities that engage our students in work that connects Earth science to New York City, and also allows them to have a voice in their community and future.

From exploring and advocating for the health of the New York City waterways, to learning about sustainability projects in their region, it is one of our goals to provide our kids with a rich and authentic science learning experience. Our students are the voices of tomorrow and we want them to learn in the best ways that they can.

My Project

The National Science Teacher Association Conference offers the latest innovations in science education. Topics include: making science content more accessible to all learners, unique teaching strategies, and research that allows us to grow as professional educators. The NSTA conference is geared towards making stronger educators for our kids.

As a lifetime learner and educator, growing professionally is an integral part of harnessing my craft and becoming a better teacher.

My students are all unique. They come from different countries, speak different languages and have a range of special abilities. As such, the ways in which they learn varies dramatically. At this conference, I will focus on different strategies and activities to engage my students in rigorous science work. I hope to bring back a number of new tools to use with my kids this year and expand my overall teaching repertoire.
