This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 12th grade students are hardworking and motivated but senior year has brought a lot of challenges that warranted unnecessary stress. Many of them are exhausted with college applications, internships, after school programs and academics and I would love to have a gardening club that they can come to at the end of the day to de stress, learn about plant care while also taking care of their mental health.

Many of my students come from different backgrounds and mostly live in apartment buildings where they may not necessarily have access to a backyard or a garden.

The goal of this project is not only for students to know how to grow plants but also for them to develop a love for indoor gardening. While their plants are growing, they are not only learning about plant growth and development but learning character skills like patience, perseverance and hard work. While engaging in this activity, they are not only nurturing their minds but also their souls leading to a positive mental health.

Through the gardening club, we also would love to engage the school community by distributing plants to be placed in teachers classroom and volunteer to take care of their plants year long. We would love to initiate conversations to other students about climate change and its impact on plant growth and the environment.
