I teach 3rd grade T.E.A.M. class (Teaching Enriched Academics to Minorities). In a low socioeconomically challenged community.

Imagine this: you are 8 years old. You live in a small, crowded home, where sustenance is always on everyone’s minds. You long for a place you can get lost in, and travel to a place learning new things and discovering new adventures. The TV is always on at home, but books are quietly absent. Neither are there newspapers, although occasionally you see a magazine that’s filled with slick advertisements. You have access to some books at school, but the room is frigid; the chairs and desks are rock-hard and very uncomfortable. Often my students lay around the room and get lost in their reading in a land of make believe.

My school is in a low socioeconomic area, where many students have concerns that no child should ever have to face. The students in my class are all on or above grade level and have a thirst for learning. I am feeding that thirst. I want my students to continue to discover the joys and benefits of reading. In our journey to prepare for the FCAT, I’m building a class library and working on fun and inviting reading area. A change of scenery can relieve their stress and provide them with a comfortable and inviting place where they can discover the sweet taste of knowledge.

I want them to discover the warm pleasure of hunkering down in a cushioned chair and being swept away. If we help students discover a love of reading, then everything—test scores, literacy and cultural awareness and responsibility—will surely follow! I believe by transforming the reading environment and adding 5 bean bags, my students thirst for learning will continue to grow. And you can be the one to make that happen! My project needs 5 bean bag chairs for my third grade class. The cost of this proposal is about $300, which includes shipping for any materials requested.
