This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning my students line-up and I greet each of them by shaking hands and a personalized, "Good morning". I know it makes them feel special. My favorite quotes, “Give and you shall receive”. As they foster a healthy environment for plant and fish growth, they will receive a reward of seeing it.

My students are the best 5th graders I know!

They are so bright and always ready to learn or do something new! I work at a Title 1 school and for many of my students this is their safe haven where they will be provided with clean water, cool or warm air and two meals a day and most importantly my caring heart as I love each and everyone of them! The Leadership team at our school is awesome and it shows everywhere on our campus. My students are not only bright but they are funny and we enjoy being around each other. Outside of having fun, my students are serious when it comes to learning and being the best at what they are doing. They are competitive but in a constructive way, they lean on each other in the areas they are weak in and they praise and encourage each other in times of achievement.

My Project

My classroom has adopted a greenhouse on our school campus, which has intrigued their desire to see things grow. We did some research on growing healthy plants and some of them stumbled on aquaponic and hydroponic systems. We made a promise to incorporate both in our classroom if possible and extend it to an afterschool program for other students interested in our healthy approach to growing fruit, herbs, vegetables and fish! How amazing! This learning for this project is endless, it will cover ecology, agriculture and so many more components in science. We as a class will learn more about aquaponics and how to successfully balance the cycle of growth between plants and fish. We will try to grow a variety of foods that interest them and give it a try!

This donation would improve my classroom because my students love to learn new things!

My students are so bright that interesting projects/lesson like this help keep them engaged and using a higher level of thinking. Real world and hands on projects/lessons are so important in our teaching and learning today. I am positive that they will take back what they have learned about healthy growing and eating to their friends, families, and communities as this is such a fun way to grow what you eat!
