My Students

No day is typical in our room! Each experience in our classroom is a new one with potential to change a life. One of the things that they can rely on is that science is a subject that involves all their senses and can showcase their abilities despite any language or learning barriers.

Our students are products from immigrant parents.

Many of the children themselves are new to the country and are English language learners. Even in their native language, the children are eager to learn more and be better. Because so many are struggling to express themselves to show what they know, we need other outlets that will allow them to do so successfully. These materials can provide students with the hands-on experience that the children can refer to in order to prove their thinking or express their ideas more clearly.

My Project

Students in grades K-5 will be able to participate in the cultivation of plant life within our greenhouse. During the winter months, the students will be able to continue to plant, observe changes, and journal their findings in the greenhouse. They will also be a more active part of the overall school initiative to boost school wellness by harvesting their crops and sharing with classmates products of their efforts to improve more healthful food choices. In addition, the crops will be rotated to our outdoor garden in the spring to continue the life cycle and expand the students' understanding of agriculture and its impact in our society.

Students learn by doing.

To read from a textbook, especially for those students who are struggling with the English language or those who have various learning disabilities, does not benefit them the way conducting hands-on investigations would. Being immersed in an experiment that involves concrete models that uses all your senses has shown that students perform better and learn more than simply reading abstract concepts alone.
