Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face challenges not only within their environment, but also cognitive and physical challenges. This project will allow them to gain confidence and connect to their environment in a very real and concrete way. They can grow their own healthy food.

My students are very special in all aspects of their development.

They have several special needs at such a crucial time in their development; preschool age. They range from severe physical challenges, to severe cognitive challenges. However, their view of the world is such a pure and unhindered view; one which touches everyone they meet. This garden will give them a place of their own. A place they can grow not only their "salads", but their confidence and self esteem. This is something which will allow them to fully understand and internalize our classroom motto "I CAN DO IT".

My Project

This garden will not only grow healthy food which my students who come from a high poverty area may not have access to; but this garden will grow their confidence and self esteem. My students need 6 earth boxes which includes planter boxes, potting soil, and weed guards. They also need 6 sets of gardening tools, which include shovels and rakes to work their garden. They will be able to interact with the earth and watch as the soil produces something that they will be able to eat. They will be able to develop life skills and social skills which is imperative for my students to develop.

This project is important not only to my students with special needs, but also the community of students who will watch as they grow something they will be able to share.

They will be able to tell everyone in the school and their families that they may face challenges but given the opportunity and exposure they can do big things. This will instill a sense of confidence in not only my students and all of those who are touched by their special outlook on life.
