Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are third/fourth/fifth grade, self-contained, special education classroom in a high poverty neighborhood in the South Bronx.

The students have been classified learning disabled or speech impaired.

Many of the students are English Language Learners, and all are performing several years below grade level in all subject areas. While the students and the school face many of the challenges that seem to come with a high poverty neighborhood, the students are happy, motivated, and the school does a great job, under the circumstances of creating a safe, comfortable haven in the midst of periodic violence and chaos.

My Project

I will be teaching third, fourth and fifth grade special education students remotely this Fall and I would like to make sure my lessons POP!

This year I want to make sure students really engage with the lessons by using methods that make the content more interactive and interesting - using manipulatives, highlighting text, using music and art, and being able to hone in on text.

The document camera will help students better visualize content - I will be able to annotate text in real time, explain concepts using the whiteboard, show math work directly on the screen in real time, and use manipulatives to explain math concepts.

The headset will allow me to hear the students better and hopefully they will hear me better as I read them poetry, read alouds, and play music for learning and enjoyment!
