Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am requesting a classroom book organizer so that my students may be able to select books with purpose, by living in a literate classroom. I have built an effective classroom library that serves to instruct for deeper comprehension. The students have access and choices to a variety and quality of books. They are able to do some self-selected reading. The books are carefully chosen and aligned to the California standards, second grade curriculum. The project components include author and genre studies, shared reading, read aloud, and thematic studies. However the books need to be organized in a manner that will easily facilitate access to the books. The books have already been organized (and labeled) to make the book selection a direct choice. Currently the books are in milk crate containers, which is not the best way for the students to find the books or to return them. I teach in East Palo Alto, California; 99% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students’ living conditions are often times challenging to say the least. If I had a substantial container to put the books in, it would only enhance and maximize this project. My students love to read and I want to nurture and promote reading as the most valuable aspect of education. Groucho Marx was quoted as saying, “Outside a dog a man’s best friend is a book, inside a dog it is very dark.” Thank you.
