This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Thank you for stopping by. My name is Mr. Tom. I teach 3-K, that is 3 year olds, in a New York City Public School. My school is located in an underserved area of East Harlem New York City. We are a Title I school, everyone receives free breakfast and most receive free or reduced-price lunch. The children in my class come from the immediate area here in East Harlem.

The children in my class are curious and motivated little learners that deserve a variety of quality materials to engage them and foster their creativity and build critical thinking skills.

In my class currently I have children who are motivated to be independent. Often they would see me doing something like putting the sleeping cots away, I turn around and they are all pitching in to help. Recently we made butter and the children were very excited to see the heavy cream turn into a solid and change color.

My Project

We do not have any tricycles, scooters or helmets for the children to ride on. This gross motor activity also benefits neurological and physical development as well. Think of how the whole body is working to just balance, not to mention all of the other concepts like simple machines, friction and force.

Think of all of the things that are happening within the brain and the body just to sit on a bike and make it move.

Think of the excitement a child will have riding a bike for the 1st time.

There is not much more to say about this other than it is needed and extremely beneficial to the child's development.
