Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a very high poverty school in the middle of Silicon Valley, East Palo Alto, California. 58% of our students are categorized homeless (up from 35% just about 5 years ago). My students come from homes with loving and caring families, but obviously have housing conditions that are quite challenging to say the least. The overcrowding can sometimes leave some of our students lacking in better control of their gross and fine motor skills. We also know, that these developmental stages are universal and that the better control they have over gross and fine motor skills, the better they will be prepared for the cognitive work of reading and writing.

My Project

My students will be able play with water, sand, blocks, and balancing beams, to coordinate gross motor skills with fine motor skills. I have the opportunity to work with small groups of threes, in 45 minute blocks, to engage them in routines, where they can hunt for objects in sand (tactile, measure and play with water (spatial), build structures (coordination), and walk on beams (balance and control). I will create opportunities for them to use objects with the materials, that will provide play time for learning. In addition I will also integrate oral language development to help my students use real time experiences to practice language structures. The ultimate goal is to help my students feel good about their bodies so that the work of reading and writing is promoted in a more natural flow. “Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.”-Mr. Rogers
