Help me give my students a text that engages them by drawing on real experiences connected to their world outside school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My English and history classes are filled with a diverse group of students who bring unique experiences and cultures to our class.
I want my class to be a place for teenagers to understand the stories they are a part of and to begin to tell their own stories.
It's important to me that they see the classroom as a place where their story matters, and that the narratives of English and history class come to life in relation to their stories—and not just as some dry excerpt from a textbook that crumbles to dust after the bell rings.
My Project
Like many schools, we are struggling to update our library and bookroom to reflect our student population. That means more titles by authors of color and voices from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. It also means subject matter that reflects students' real lives, drawing their experiences of the world into the classroom and making them "count" in the curriculum.
I am requesting a set of the book Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence.
In this engaging collection of essays, Geoff Canada uses his experience growing up in a tough neighborhood, as well as his work as an educator and community organizer, to explore a simple question: "Are people born violent?" The subject, the relatable anecdotes, and the sophistication of the text make this a great match for my AP English students.
