Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I teach 7th grade science to all 100 7th graders, including gifted students and students with special needs. Most of the students have been in the school together since they were in kindergarten. Our school has a strong sense of community and teachers know the students and their families. Our school has students who love to learn and are excited about science! They are energetic, helpful, smart and always try their best!

My Project

My students are currently growing edible plants in collaboration with Fairchild Tropical Garden and NASA to experiment with plants suitable for space travel. They have been incredibly inspired by this experience and want to conduct even more experiments related to increasing edible mass when growing food.

This larger botany lab will allow my students to observe the growth of many more plants from germination to harvest and collect long term data such as plant width, height, depth, total mass and edible mass.

They will calculate averages and analyze the data to determine the crop with the most edible mass. My students are excited to grow herbs and root vegetables in our upcoming experiments. Students will learn the importance of collecting accurate data, maintaining and properly caring for plants, work cooperatively towards a common goal and most of all, experience the results of their hard work on harvest day!
