This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle school technology students are an energetic bunch of 7th and 8th graders who attend our Title I equity-focus school in Hayward, CA. Many of my students don't have a lot of fancy toys and games at home to learn about STEAM, so I'd like to use our classroom and after-school club to give them the opportunity to build and code solar-powered robots and cars as well as learn about how wind can produce green energy.

Our entire school body learns about climate change and how to reduce carbon emissions: how cool would it be to give all my students hands-on experience building solar cars, a wind-generator kit, coding robots, a hydraulic robotic arm, hover racers, rockets, a potato clock, and other great building projects to excite their curiosity, engage them, and teach them about climate change solutions all at the same time?

It would be amazing to see different groups of our young teens working on different kits and then teaching each other what they learned in the building/coding/testing process. I love to empower my students to explore and investigate phenomena such as converting wind and sun power into electricity. It's my belief that these kits would be the perfect way to ignite their curiosity about climate change solutions available today—and potentially have them dream up the climate change solutions of the future!
