About My Students

My students are 6th graders who attend the Citizen Science After School Club. They are coming from low income families and belong to the minorities. Even though they have low scores on the state exams, they are energetic, fun and want to learn science outside the school.

My students are community activists. They like to be exposed to different problems in their community and try to figure out what they can do to fix the things that are very significant and important for the community but nobody cares about

We would like to expand our garden and at the same time use these planter beds as the green infrastructure to reduce the runoff and Combined Sewer Overflow when it rains a lot. We would install them near the drainage areas so that less sewage would be at the East or Hudson Rivers

In Their Own Words

We create the green areas to make sure less water goes into the rivers near our community. We learned that the more it rains more sewage goes in the East or Hudson Rivers and we want to do something to reduce the amount of sewage that goes in to the rivers

We want to make difference in the community we live. We are 6th graders and we attend the citizen science club where we learn about the combined sewage overflow and its affect on the estuary. We, as the group, want to create green areas to help our community and be activists.

This project is important because it helps to reduce runoff of the rain water and reduces the amount of sewage going into the rivers where a lot of animals and plants live. Every time it rains all our feces and garbage goes into the river destroying the habitat of all living things. We don't want that and would like to do anything we can to reduce the sewage going into the rivers
