Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is considered a second home to many of my students. I teach 5th grade in Brooklyn NY. Our students come from many diverse cultures and are from low income families. The cultural diversity in or school is what makes the environment very unique. We as adults, learn with our students every day. Our teachers are the examples of adults that our students look up to as role models. Because of that, I strive everyday to be the best teacher I can be for these kids.

Our students are so special because they work so hard on things that others take for granted.

Our students choose to come to school everyday!

My Project

I carefully chose flexible seating as my first Donors Choose project because my goals coincide with getting my students to love reading again.

The challenging part is keeping them focused on the books and the endurance it takes to keep on reading.

I strongly believe that if our students have the opportunity to actually get comfortable with their book, in their own cozy spot, they will look forward to reading everyday.

Students are back in the drivers seat when it comes to choice of books. Too often students are forced to read books that they have no interest in, this year our curriculum changed.

This flexible seating project will give my ESL students a chance to getup out of their desks and go to another area of the room so they can fully escape into their books. Flexible seating classrooms give students a choice in what kind of leaning space works best for them and encourages them to engage in critical thinking processes among peers.

Flexible seating opportunities allow the students to control where they want to sit. There will be a variety of seating choices that will suit their needs in order to put forth their best learning self. The students will feel as if they own their space. The classroom becomes our room, not just the teachers room. My work space is actually smaller this year than it ever was in the past in order to make more room for the kids to be comfortable.

Lastly, flexible seating classrooms create an aura of a relaxed learning environment where the students can focus on the tasks of each day, their own way, using these tools as a means to remain focused.
