Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a Kindergarten teacher in the Bronx. My students come from families of low socio-economic status. Half of my class are in the English Language Learner program. My students need reading centers to enhance their reading skills. My students are just beginning to learn how to read. This is a very exciting time in their lives. My students love Reading Center Time. After we have a reading lesson with the whole group, my students have Reading Center Time. This is the time of the day where students practice skills we have learned with a partner, in a group or independently. Reading Centers provide students with the opportunity to work at their own pace. Reading Center Time is a time of the day that students look forward to because they are "playing." The students are learning through what they consider play! Many of the activities involve some kind of manipulative that the students use. The students may use magnetic letters to make words or they may match objects, like a toy boat to the letter "B". The students enjoy these activities and are learning a lot from these centers. However, we need more centers. The key to center time is varying the activities. I would like reading centers for my kindergarten students.
