My Students

My students attend a large, comprehensive urban magnet school in Philadelphia with over 2000 students. Coming from all neighborhoods, the students represent the vibrancy and diversity of Philadelphia; each class I teach is comprised of students from at least ten different racial, ethnic, or national origin groups.

Although my students are talented, they are not privileged and struggle to afford the extra-curricular events, like field trips or new literature, that enhance the educational experience.

The students crave the opportunities to view cultural events and to visualize literature being made real.

My Project

By attending this theatrical production, my students will be able to experience a unique text created by one of Philadelphia's great writers, Lorene Cary, and her production of a true American hero: Harriet Tubman. Through attendance in My General Tubman, my students will be able to view high quality theater by a premiere Philadelphia writer.

The students of Philadelphia deserve the ability to participate in the world class productions offered by the Arden Theater in Philadelphia.

Participation in this activity will allow the students the rare opportunity to engage in viewing high quality production of historical fiction and allow for the synthesis of historical fiction with literary production.
