Help Mrs. Larson

I teach 7th grade reading at a middle school. We have a high percentage of low income families. We are close to an Army base, so our population is comprised of military families as well as a farming community. Our middle school is a very caring environment and the staff works well together to provide a nurturing environment for the students.

Our society is very focused on external beauty. At the middle school, we battle this false perception on a daily basis as students are picked on because of what they wear or how they look. We put into place character trait training with an emphasis on improving self-esteem. The novel, "Uglies" is another avenue to express that inner beauty is more important than external beauty.

I need thirty copies of the novel "Uglies" to enhance the current reading curriculum. Along with this novel, I will also portray the inner versus outer beauty struggle through the use of a Twilight Zone episode entitled "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder."

Your help will ensure that the students in this particular 7th grade have access to a novel that could change current perceptions of what is beautiful and what is not. Students who are concerned about their outward appearance may learn that enhancing their inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.
