My Students

My students attend a large diverse public high school in a big city. We are part of a STEMM (Science Technology Engineering Math Medicine) magnet. English Language Arts is a place where students can explore how the arts intersect with all that science. In our classrooms, they have the opportunity to be surrounded by many different people with unique stories.

My students are intelligent, inquisitive, and enthusiastic about their studies.

They get excited when we use project-based learning to deepen connections between literature, current events, history, and STEMM-related issues. They care deeply about the future they are charged with shaping, and I am continually impressed with how eager they are to learn about ways to improve our world.

My Project

There's nothing like a great book to transport you into other worlds. Even better are books that inspire you to write your own stories, or even novels, like we will this November for National Novel Writing Month.

These books will help students be able to better understand the craft of a novel as they become novel world-builders themselves.

Every November during National Novel Writing Month, we celebrate the art of novel writing, inspired by great books and young novelists like S.E. Hinton (15 when she wrote The Outsiders), George Korman (12), and Christopher Paolini (14). The book in this project will inspire students to write the stories they want to read. From gripping plot lines to brilliant structures to unforgettable characters, these books will help us map our way forward as storytellers.
