This coming fall I will be teaching a widely diverse group of sixth graders. In this class, there will be children from many different cultures, religions and educational backgrounds. They will come to me with many different learning styles and needs.
Our school is a title-one school, with over 50% of our students receiving free or reduced-priced lunches.
With the special population of students our school serves, we have embraced the challenge and our students have outperformed their peers continuously over the past ten years. One of our mottos is Read to Succeed!
My Project
Providing a variety of great novels to young readers is a positive step forward in making them into life-long readers! These novels are literary works that have been picked as the best of the what's new and will be part of our school district's Battle of the Books for 2019-2020.
Students will have the choice to pick the titles that they want to read.
With multiple titles, they can read these independently, in book groups, or at lunch with me, their teacher. These books can be used in the classroom and at home, with the main idea to get literature into the hands of each student, where they can learn to love to read.
Benefits of having these novels in our classroom include making students better readers. Students who read these titles also have an opportunity to compete in the Battle of the Books competition towards the end of the year. This is a great motivator for many of my students.
Please consider donating to this project. My students will grow as readers as they read with others or on their own. Thank you!
