Do you remember sitting at the foot of your teacher and listening to a story so wonderful that your imagination was tickled and you didn't even care about the new toy your mom gave you anymore?
I teach first grade at a school that is 99% African-American.
These wonderful students live in a very low income area of Washington, DC. Our school has not made AYP in seven years. My little ones are below grade average in both reading and math. These children are at risk of being severely below-grade level for their entire education. Please help me close the achievement gap by engaging them in great read aloud books!
My students will gain so much from listening to exciting and meaningful children's literature. A read-aloud can teach so many reading objectives not to mention build listening skills. My students will listen to these wonderful stories and practice making inferences, drawing conclusions, identifying story structure, summarizing, and comparing and contrasting.
This project is important because my students deserve the opportunity to hear the stories that are beloved by many.
True, I could check these books out from the local library. But I know from experience that when a child truly falls in love with a story, they will want to hear it again and again. They will ask to borrow the book. They will read it on their own during free time. With these books in my classroom library, my little ones will be able to do that.
