Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings." William Arthur Ward. I believe that starting each class with a written gratitude practice, in special journals, will help my students learn and thrive in my class.

My students are all newly arrived immigrants from over 45 countries around the world.

They have all experienced a profound change in their lives, leaving their home countries for a life in New York. Many have experienced trauma, either leaving unsafe conditions and risking their lives to come here, and/or entering into a very unfamiliar life with families who may be strangers to them, in a city that can be harsh even for its natives. My students are profound, caring, and deeply wise beyond their years. My school is an extremely welcoming place, where they feel safe and supported as they make this major transition.

My Project

With personal gratitude journals, my students and I will start each day writing down three things for which we feel gratitude (more specifically related to people in our lives who have either done something for us, or a special experience we've had). We will also engage in an "awe narrative" where we describe in writing a time we felt a sense of awe. This could be as simple as describing a moment where you felt loved and appreciated deeply or a beautiful sunset or other moment in nature. Numerous scientific studies have shown that people who engage in a regular gratitude practice experience the following benefits: they are happier, more resilient, have more satisfying relationships, less stress, lower blood pressure, are healthier in general, and better able to cope, they feel positive emotions longer and negative ones less. It is an antidote to contempt, entitlement and blame, depression, and bullying, while increasing moral behavior, and pro social behavior.

It is my belief that by starting each day with this activity, and then sharing it orally with a partner, my students will experience greater levels of happiness, sufficiency, peace, contentment, less stress, more connections to their peers and humanity in general.

The benefits are long lasting and will carry into their outside lives. Further, with this daily practice, students will be ready to learn! It will help them get grounded, centered, and focused for the important work we need to do.
