My Project

Our low-income Bronx community has many young members who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and communication delays. These preschoolers are EXCITED about their community and have taken neighborhood field trips to the supermarket, library, and community resource centers. We've also been learning about our community helpers and would like to create crafts to present as a big THANK YOU to our first responders such as police, EMT, and firefighters, along with other community neighbors such as librarians and community resource workers.

We'd like to support student interest and joy with these community members by having students design and create their own cards, letters, posters, and t-shirts to express gratitude and share positive affirmations.

We intend to extend our appreciation to our community workers who help this neighborhood flourish. As part of our community project, we plan to use the cricut machine to make cut outs to paste on cards and posters as well as cut vinyl with positive affirmations and quotes to support mental health awareness, then iron on t-shirts. With Mental Health Awareness month approaching in May, we plan to collaborate with other teachers to have a spring celebration, where these shirts will be distributed. It is our hope to spread our love and joy to promote emotional wellness to other young people and their families.
