My Students

The students and student-athletes I teach and coach travel from every New York City borough to attend class daily. Living here shares the same difficulties you see anywhere else: parents working long hours to make ends meet, paying bills, and putting (processed) meals on the table – with higher average costs. Going from place to place is not easy. Commutes can take up a sizable chunk of the day. Yet this is the only way of life many of my student-athletes know. So after a long school day, both boys and girls deserve to unwind and play a unique game that offers benefits different from those acquired in the classroom.

This is where rugby enters.

As the City of New York struggles to meet the physical and dietary health needs of its students, I work beyond the school day to positively influence young lives through sport. The challenges of school, training, and city commuting are plenty. Many sacrifices are made by the families involved. However, all of the time, money, and energy invested demonstrates its value when student-athlete accomplishments stretch from the field, back to school and family, and into the community – improving who we are as people.

My Project

Rugby is one-of-a-kind. The sport caters to all kinds of body shapes, sizes, speeds, ages, and skill sets, and is equitable for boys and girls. Even rugby jerseys are unique as the numbers designate the positions of players on the pitch. Donations from this campaign will outfit the physical diversity of our present (and future) male and female 'ruggers' with team-issued shorts and team-issued jerseys that represent player roles on the field. We chose a durable, US-manufactured brand to not only stay local, but to have our "hooped" jersey look last the team several years of competition.

Rugby is a multi-season sport.

My boys rugby and girls rugby sides play two seasons during the school year – fall and spring. The boys and girls are about to exit the "between-seasons off-season" for only the second time in school history. I coach the both sides of the club at once, so boys and girls co-train throughout March in preparation for their respective contests in April/May. This spring, the girls play a 4-tournament series of sevens rugby and the boys play a seven-match 15s schedule.

The school was able to award the club $200 to split between seasons. Unfortunately, this award would not cover the costs for both the referee and EMT required to host just one home match – nor is it enough to rent a bus for just one of our contests outside the reaches of mass transit. So I must humbly turn to the generosity of others to help our team obtain long-lasting equipment and match gear while I work to ensure our matches kickoff without issue.
