My Students

Despite challenges with virtual learning, my students are coming to class ready to learn and are eager to try new things! However, our school is a Title I inner-city school, and most of our students are relying on me to show them how to navigate this new learning environment. While I am excited about being able to teach my students, I am nervous about the new challenges we are facing with distance learning and how it will affect them going forward. We are 100% virtual for the foreseeable future, and that is something no one was planning on. I am currently teaching from home, so I invite 60 students into my makeshift classroom 4 days a week for 90 minutes at a time. An average of 90% of my students show up to class, so I feel immense pressure to make online learning engaging, so they continue to come to class.

Even though our school schedule mirrors a typical middle school day, this year is anything but typical.

Just like my students, I am learning as I go. We are helping each other with technology, and they are giving me daily feedback on what methods are working.

My Project

In three weeks we start in person learning after a year of being virtual. Along with many safety regulations students are not allowed to share materials and we are encouraged to stay away from paper materials. I have several units coming up that use coordinate planes and graph paper to aid with instruction: Transformations, Slope/Y-Intercept, Quadrilaterals, Similar Figures, Histograms, Surface Area and Volume, 3D models, and Composite Figures. If students had access to a graphing whiteboard then they could avoid sharing materials while still being able to visually learn the content. While most content will be online, technology isn't guaranteed to work every day. Therefore, a supply of pencils will be necessary if the need arises. Since pencils can't be shared, students would be able to keep the pencil I give them and use it all day.

Students are not allowed to use lockers and must carry their bookbag full of materials around from class to class.

The other side of the whiteboard is blank, so it could be used for computation. Having a dual purpose whiteboard and marker with eraser eliminates the amount of materials students will have carry in their bookbags. This transition will be difficult and I want to try and make it as easy and stress free as possible.
