Graphing Patterns of Cellular Respiration using rates of CO2 flux

Help me give my students more tools to measure and graph rates of cellular respiration. They are used to measure carbon dioxide fluxes from living organisms including plants, yeast, and insects as well as soils.

My Project

Collecting, graphing, and analyzing data is an essential skill for students in both mathematics and science. This Vernier CO2 sensor and the two biochambers are simple but effective ways for students to collect their own data on rates of cellular respiration across a variety of different organisms including plants, insects, and microorganisms like yeast and soil bacteria. These tools will provide opportunities for students to practice and develop their scientific design skills, data collection skills, data analysis skills including calculating mean rates of respiration, standard deviations and standard errors, as well as generating graphs utilizing this processed data. The Vernier CO2 sensor is very simple to use and a lot of data can be collected in the span of a single class period. This allows for students to investigate different questions and compare their results using statistical analyses as well as graphical analyses. Once students have completed the data processing and graphing, they will have to work to interpret and evaluate their results. Analysis, interpretation, and evaluation are all mathematical skills needed to perform successfully on national and state tests including the ACT. The more practice students have working with data, the more fluent they will become in the language of both mathematics and science.
