My Students

My students are in grades 10-12. They are a diverse group but they are all interested in learning mathematics. Statistics is the class that lights a fire under the students. For many, it is the first time they see the real life applications of math. Pre-Calculus is the building block to careers in engineering and medicine.

Our high school is a five-year comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in grades 8-12 and is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

32% of the students are identified as low-income, 11% have a first language other than English, and 12% are identified as special education. Our high school serves seven different villages in our community.

My Project

I am asking for donations of 5 graphing calculators to my classroom. A graphing calculator is necessary in higher level math courses to display data, analyze graphs, study data and perform statistical tests. These little handheld computers are amazing. Many of my students have their own graphing calculators but every year I have a handful that can not afford to purchase one (they cost between $100 and $200 even for a used one).

By donating to our project, you will help students learn to use technology.

The calculators are both a teaching and learning tool in the classroom. Students will be able to display the data they collect, find summary statistics and increase their academic achievement. Plus in this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
