Graphing Calculators That Talk!!!

We need graphing calculators to solve the 21st-century math problems we face daily.

About My Students

I work with a diverse population of extremely bright Mathematicians who are excelling at High School Math One and they are just middle schoolers! These 70 students share 6 graphing calculators. I would like the students to be able to have one calculator per student and rotate taking them home to expand their learning.

These Eighth-grade students are eager learners and will be our future scientists, engineers, programmers, and mathematicians. Investing in them now will help us all out in the future.

In Accelerated Math my Eighth-grade students share six graphing calculators and then draw what they see on their paper. Graphing calculators can connect to computers and students can communicate about what happens with a negative sign, or changing an exponent, or even adding a line. This allows them to visually connect math with concepts in everyday life making it relevant and real world applicable!

These calculators will bring our class into the 21st century.

Please help these awesome students get the graphing calculators that they want and need to communicate their math ideas with classmates, to work as a team, and to collaborate.

In Their Own Words

With this project, we are trying to get a class set of graphing calculators. Graphing calculators allow us to visually see the mathematical equations that we solve. By seeing it visually, we are able to realize how math is part of our everyday life. Many times it takes a really long time to make these graphs, which is why we need the graphing calculators so we can manipulate the equations and solve real world everyday problems.

Not only did my friend and I write up this project, but we brought it to our teacher. She has already purchased some graphing calculators on her own, but she can't afford a class set all by herself. We thought we could help by reaching out to Donors Choose. We will monitor the project and update the class about its progress. When it gets funded, we will be in charge of unpacking the boxes, setting up the calculators, numbering them, and then we will be the first to use them.

This project is SO important. Math equations are one thing, but we are beyond that. We are actually applying our math skills to real world problems. In order to help us see the equations quickly and to manipulate data, we need graphing calculators. This project will solve that challenge, but it will also make us more college and career ready. We will be thinking critically, applying our thinking skills, and extending what the textbook has to offer.
